Denise Bailey Counselling Services
As a counselling professional, I strive to support individuals and families in becoming their best selves. I believe all people have the ability to create positive change in their lives. My strong ethical practice and value of utmost confidentiality supports a trusting therapeutic relationship which allows clients to grow. As a long time northerner, being able to serve my community allows me to fulfill my passion to create strong families and empower individuals.
I am not accepting new clients at this time.
My Biography
I am a long time Yellowknifer who moved to the community in 2001 after completing a Child and Youth Care Degree at the University of Victoria. I immediately found work at Diavik Diamond Mine, which increased my sense of community in the north. Within a few months, I left the mine to work in a behavioural treatment program for young children and later at a local Women's Shelter. Since then my time was divided between facilitating the DoEdaezhe Leadership and Resiliency Program and working in Child and Family Services where I developed case management, crisis intervention, and community liaison experience.
I am a graduate of the Master of Counselling program from the University of Lethbridge and a Professional Member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, possessing a Canadian Certified Counsellor (C.C.C) designation. I also have a Bachelor of Social Work Degree and am a Registered Social Worker licensed to practice in the Northwest Territories and the province of British Columbia.
I have had the opportunity to work with clients from ages 5-75, in the areas of self-esteem, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and trauma. I bring a variety of skills to my profession as a counsellor, including my calm demeanor, ability hold space for others, and my genuineness. I can be contacted at denisebailey@theedge.ca
What is Counselling
_JPG.jpg)
Counselling is a professional relationship intended to empower clients to create desired change in their lives, and applies mental health, psychological and human development principles to address wellness, personal growth or career development. Counsellors listen in a way that supports clients’ personal awareness and growth. Counsellors assist clients in finding their inner power and voice, by incorporating specific professional competencies to promote change in the affective, behavioural, relational and spiritual aspects of self.
What to Expect
I am a person-centred, trauma informed counsellor. I believe that clients have the answers within, and I am there to encourage, be present, and witness. I do not offer advice, but use my training to help clients develop insights into their experiences. Clients may want to learn new ways of thinking about the problem, or change their feelings about a situation; we will work on your goals together. I practice with an integrative approach, blending aspects of Narrative therapy, CBT techniques, Emotionally Focused therapy and elements of Solution focused therapy. I believe change takes place within a trusting therapeutic relationship.
I provide individual counselling to children, youth and adults, and specialize in couples counselling.
Sessions are 50 minutes in length, and I offer sessions in the evening and on the weekends.
